( Atlanta , GA ). The Estate of Dr. Nina Simone has created a special visual and performing arts tribute titled The Nina Simone Experience. Billy D. Williams, Speech from the music group Arrested Development as well as the family of the legendary Godfather of Soul have all offered their support to honoring Nina Simone's life and legacy.

'The Experience' will take place from April 16th through April 25th at Space Atlanta / Thirteen TEN Events located in Atlanta 's historic West End community at 1310 White Street . The 10-day series includes a fine art exhibition, a spoken word cabaret, a fashion event inspired by Nina's style, as well as other activities exploring the cultural impact of one of the 20th century's greatest entertainers.

'The Experience' will commence with an opening gala Friday April 16th at 7pm following a media and art collectors' preview at 6pm. Throughout the evening there will be performances by Simone, Nina's daughter who's career is flying after a recent Simone on Simone album dedicated to her mom. She will be accompanied by Dekalb School of the Arts, a Grammy Award winning magnet arts school. The evening's additional musical tributes include local singers Erica James, Samantha Cardwell, Ozara Ode' and Twinspirit. There will also be an unveiling of a new Nina Simone statue by George Nock, a sculptor and former NY Jets professional football player.

Anthony R. Page, the Committee Chair and Project Manager, says 'Nina's impact is huge, so it was appropriate for us to let the community shape this event. Our partners, community leaders and many creative talents have transformed The Experience based on their love and appreciation for Nina. The final result will be well suited to Dr. Simone's legacy.'

Among those creative talents is Speech, from the Grammy Award-winning group Arrested Development. He will offer a keynote address and acoustic performance on Thursday April 22nd during an evening titled, Music is My Weapon. He noted "Nina is a special and bright light in the arts." This program activity will support the efforts of the 'I Am Atlanta Campaign,' which is a philanthropic organization acting as a stimulus project for the benefit of economic growth, citywide patrons, enlightenment, community awareness and leadership activation.

Deanna Brown-Thomas, one of James Brown's daughters expressed their excitement about being involved in the series, 'We are pleased that Simone is celebrating her mother's legacy in this way, and we, (The James Brown Family Children's Foundation) are glad to support her quest to keep her mother's legacy alive.' Actor Billy Dee Williams is one of the participating featured artists and was delighted to have the opportunity to create a painting for the occasion.

Jonathan Green, noted by art critics and reviewers as one of the most important painters of the southern experience; and Paul Goodnight, whose works have been featured in films such as Ghost, The Preachers Wife, Speed II and Jackie Brown, are among forty-six Atlanta-based and national visual artists in the exhibition titled after Nina's song: I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl. 2010 Trumpet Award Winner: Synthia Saint James is among the national entries into this exhibition. Her paintings grace the covers of over 70 books, including works by Alice Walker, Iyanla Vanzant, and Terry McMillan.

Several of the visual artists will take part in a panel on Saturday April 17th. The artist roundtable will include: Moderator: E. Joyce Moore, Panelists: Michael McBride, J.L. Townsend, Jonathan Green, Charlotte Riley-Webb and Dray Wilmore.

Over the last few years, there have been dozens of tributes and remembrances celebrating the High Priestess of Soul. These activities have spawned a renewed Nina Simone chatter amongst fans and aficionados around the world. 'Every where I go, so many people have come up to me, telling me their Nina stories,' says Simone, Nina's only child. 'They loved her, but at the end of her life, I don't think mommy really felt that love, so I knew I had to do something.'

'Responding to the resurgent Nina Simone interest, we made great efforts to appeal to all of Nina's fans. We know that her life and legacy are many things to many people across the world,' Page remarked. This is clear in the other components to 'The Experience.' Dr. Rosetta Ross, an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Spelman College, has coordinated a panel examining Nina Simone's legacy and black women's identities. The panel titled Being & Becoming, Black Womanhood in the Twenty-first Century includes candid dialogue with Simone; Deanna Brown-Thomas; former SNCC member Ruby Nell Sales and Spelman student Sarita Smith.

Anthony Joiner, known across Atlanta for his witty and thought provoking newsletter The A Spot, has planned a one of a kind Spoken Word cabaret on April 21st with contributions from Atlanta's most talented spoken word artists including: CNN Black in America's John Goode, Hank Stewart, Queen Sheba, Nfared, Spinxx, Nukola, Mista Funn, Salakida, Ahrielle and Miss Haze with musical guests: Chimere, Nikki Wade and Shamora.

Looking at Nina's sense of style on Friday April 23rd, Layla K, founder of Haute.Lanta Fashion Week, has put together a fashion event where designers developed works based on and inspired by The High Priestess' wardrobe at various periods during her music career. Among the designers are Beth Pilger, Marqo Kennedy, Layla K, and current Malaysia based designer: Thomas Hooker, who has created a special haute couture piece that includes rare Nina Simone photos. Summer Sheree Jeter of Smitten Designs has created a series of five original designs that will be on display as part of the exhibition.

Rounding out the list of activities is a reading of an original play by Ozara Ode' titled Nina Simone: In Her Own Words, which will take place on April 18th. There will be a closing event, that is youth focused, featuring performances by The Astronomical Kid (Astro) from NYC and Moore Arts Movement, a theater and music repertory company based in Atlanta .

Simone's Holiday Thoughts http://feeds.artistdata.com/a-C3SJ7GFDSRFZ407M/ADN-BG-257PPO6GNWQA64RN Blog entry by Simone

SIMONE’S HOLIDAY THOUGHTS

Greetings and Salutations!!

The Christmas season is upon us and 2010 is closing in. My intention was to write something “profound” over Thanksgiving but I never got around to it; choosing to take an adventure instead which resulted in the dolphin pictures you no doubt have seen.

I do hope this blog finds you well for I AM.

I will begin with my next CD that is slated to be released late 2010 – at least that’s what my label has said thus far; I do hope so!!The task of going into the studio and working on new material has proven to be more of a challenge than I anticipated. Theory is often different than reality for, on paper, there are no X-factors. Reality is fraught with them, and we are challenged to rise to each situation as our determination is tested again and again.

After spending almost 30 days in the studio recording, just prior to leaving for the Sing The Truth tour, I was riding high. I just knew the material was going to be asfly as I heard it in my mind. The Soul Planet producers flew back to Holland and we all eagerly waited as the studio files were shipped to them. That was mid June. The files were held up at customs until mid August. By that time, I was chewing my nails. Once the files were retrieved and themusic reworked into a rough format, another 2 months had passed. The momentum was lost and I felt as if all the creative wind had been lost with it. So, I decided to take a creative break and concentrate on getting my daughter into a good school. And, that’s what I’ve been doing since the beginning of October. I continued to write, pray and wait.

On November 19th I received a phone call from one of my managers. In short, he’d just gotten off the phone with someone I’d done a demo with about 3 years ago. This person had called to inquire about my new project because he was hoping to introduce me to a producer he thought would work well with me. As God would have it, both the producer and I are in the same place. Serendipitous. I met with the producer and listened to his ideas on a concept and was smitten!! We begin recording in January 2010 and I am over the moon! All those who I love and work with are just as excited and I think you will be quite surprised and pleased when you hear it.

I have attributed this new scenario to the fact that I didn’t “push”. I chose to lay back in the cut (not without trepidation!!)and be patient, even though I had no idea “what” I was waiting for. I also make note that this has come about from a seed planted 3 years ago when I did that demo. It is a reminder that things are at work that we are not even aware of, so caught up are we in our day to daydynamics. My faith in the ripple effect has been further stoked by this new project. And, my heart SINGS once more.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Simone

Greetings from China http://feeds.artistdata.com/a-C3SJ7GFDSRFZ407M/ADN-BG-6Q1M26RF070W3D30 Blog entry by Simone

GREETINGS FROM CHINA Ni Hao!! Don’t know if I spelled it correctly (in English) but it means “Hello” in Mandarin.

My family and I have been here for two weeks now and are due to return to the US in a week. Life in China is quite different than in the US and it constantly leaves me in a state of awe and wonder. From the language to the architecture to the food to the fashion to the medicine I am always aware that I am a stranger in a land that is strange to me. Whenever I walk down the street in the province where we stay I draw second glances that most don’tbother to mask such is their “surprise” or maybe awe and wonder, too. I have not seen too many people of color here much less with locs that are red!! Beijing is a 10 min drive away and is much more like NY in that there is much more diversity and activity on a variety of levels a la most big cities. To be honest, I don’t know where to begin……………

The day we arrived (after a 13 hour direct flight!!!) at the International Airport we commented on how efficient the Chinese system is with regards to moving large groups of people through the various checkpoints. At one point there’s an automated thermometer that takes the temperature of every person that walks through it. The attendants wear surgical masks. I assume they want to make sure every person entering the country is healthy. Upon picking up our luggage and heading towards our ride we marveled at how squeaky CLEAN the garage is!!! The paint is fresh and the ground cars drive over looks like it was recently waxed. I mix up past and present tense because it was 2 weeks ago, but no doubt still looks that way this very minute. There’s a twelve hour time difference between NY and Beijing, so jet lag was a bear!

One of my first activities once we were settled was a massage. The exchange rate here is in favor of the dollar so by the time we’d been here 5 days I’d had 3 massages. After the third one I noticed one of my lymph nodes was swollen and I had a terrible headache (that’s not supposed to happen AFTER a massage!!!) and it was all downhill from there. Took me a couple of days to come to the conclusion it was a lymph node as it’s location was higher on my neck than it’s ever been; imagine the place where Frankenstein’s screws are – for lack of a better example. I stayed well enough to be able to visit the Red Snail Temple located near the Great Wall. BEEEEYOUTEEFUL!! Some of the trees are over 1,000 years old!! And, there are shrines to quite a few important deities within the culture where visitors can light incense and leave it burning or kneel on cushions placed before each one to pray. We brought our lunch and enjoyed it as much as we could while mosquitoes tried to make us their’s. There’s a toboggan ride that takes you to the top of the mountain thus allowing you to further explore. As we rode to the top I longed to walk the many stairs I saw in various locations whichled to various structures. Once we disembarked I was still working out whether or not it would be possible to climb them considering we were in a group. I finally voiced my desire, asking if I could meet everyone at a specific location if we synchronized our watches. Much to my surprise, after some harrumphing, everyone decided to come along. OMG!!! It took about 20 mins and a lot of sweat, pain and determination but we did it!! At one point I kept reminding myself how life breaks us down only to reward us for a job well done as I forced myself up one step at a time. WHAT a feeling to make it to the top of HEAVEN’S GATE (the name of the structure we chose). I took off my shoes and placed my feet on the earth for a few minutes as I looked out over the rolling hills and took deep breaths, grinning broadly while I enjoyed a few minutes alone in this place. As we descended the way we came, I had the bright idea to count the stairs – 888!!!!! ONE WAY!!! They make the stairs in Santa Monica, CA avid exercise enthusiasts frequent INSIGNIFICANT!! Our legs were shaking like jello afterwards and the pain that stayed with us varied in the coming days – but it was sooooooooooo worth it.

The next day had me on my back and I swore an elephant was sitting on my head as I lay in bed. My stress levels were a bit high as I was scheduled to sing a few songs a few days later at a party that had been set up to welcome me here. So, I set off to find an acupuncturist with the guidance of my girlfriendwho lives here. We rode bikes to a few locations as she made calls and subsequently found a place where I could receive Traditional Chinese Medicine. Since that day, I performed successfully - albeit I had to concentrate harder on technique as I was at 70% and I was with the restaurant’s house band (it was painful without my BAND) – and have returned to receive treatment 6 times.

The TMC treatments I have received have ranged from acupuncture, to cupping, to scraping (I HATE that), to lying on hot bean bags, foot soaks with herbs, a box that holds 4 cigar sticks of “moxa” (mugwort)that’s placed on the affected area, to dietary changes as per the doctor’s orders. I am proud to say I have not taken a Claritin in almost a week as my hives have NOT come back due to a recommendation to include a certain fruit in my diet which cools the liver – and it works!!! I have spent too much money and time in search of help for these hives only to come here and within two doctor visits to have been given a recommendation that has been successful. HALLELUJAH!! One thing I can say is that the Chinese doctor’s assessment of the cause of my sickness is connected to the very thing that is the cause of my hives – I’ve been told that very thing at home as well so kudos to my US healing contingent; I just recommend they come here for a stint to add to their knowledge.

My birthday is in 2 days and it’s pretty cool I’m here!!

The shopping is GREAT!!! Tiring, because you get to haggle at the YA SHOW Mall I like to go to, but always an experience I don’t regret. One realizes just how much more we pay in the West for items whose tags read “Made In China” – I’ve heard tell it’s a 400% markup, and I believe it.

Well, I am tired and getting eaten up by mosquitoes as I close this out. Thank you for staying with me throughout my journey and

STAY WELL,

Simone]]>

From Orlando to Bethlehem to Beijing http://feeds.artistdata.com/a-C3SJ7GFDSRFZ407M/ADN-BG-KAYEQ4OWFOSAHH1T Blog entry by Simone

Greetings from Orlando, FL. I arrived late last night and am now quite happy to now be reunited with my daughter; we survived the 10 days!!! And, within those 10 days I have performed with my “Bangin Band” in Park City, Utah, Minneapolis, MN and Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA.

Let me begin by saying Park City, Utah took my breath away! I was not anticipating going there only to be pleasantly surprised by everything surrounding the experience. We stayed one of the lodges in the area – it must’ve been an 8 star hotel because the pancakes were $12.00 !!! They were great, but damn! Next time I will bring a box of my own pancake mix and be just as satisfied. My room was heavenly, complete with 2 fireplaces, a full kitchen and a Jacuzzi….and I was all alone. I made use of the Jacuzzi and the fireplace and enjoyed a meal on one of the terraced restaurants overlooking the lift that was actively taking mountain bikers to the top of a mountain allowing them to enjoy a downhill ride. At 7,000 feet I think the act of going downhill was a lot easier.

Speaking of elevations, our hotel was at 7,000 ft while the venue was at 8,000+. After 4 weeks of sharing the stage and not having to be the whole show, I was already a bit nervous. Add the elevation and the fact my new band and I had only performed once together back in May and one can understand why.

Ryan Shaw (pictured here) shared the bill and opened first. I got a chance to watch him at work for a brief few minutes before I went on. I also wanted to show him my support, not that he needed it! Last time we were in the same place was when we did our showcase at Joe’s Pub in Jan 2008. We took a picture together – looks like we planned our attire all the way down to the locs.

When I went on we began with BLACK IS THE COLOR which has now become quite a piece fusing even more of “me” in it than before; you’ll see when I come to your town and I was off to the races. At times, I was reminded by my lack of breath that I needed to pace myself so I would alter my delivery of a line I might normally hold or else …….NO AIR, NO AIR. The show was a challenge I rose to, reveled in and was quite happy with especially when the entire audience stood up, stayed up and danced during my encore: STOP BY MONIES. I still smile at the thought. My band and I were back in the saddle and riding hard.

On our return to PA for one day before leaving for Minneapolis, our United flight was delayed because of mechanical problems which meant we would miss our connecting (and the last flight) flight out of Chicago. Once I took some deep breaths and reminded myself getting upset wouldn’t solve anything, I called our travel agent. Miss Nancy, the mother of the agent I normally deal with, came to our rescue immediately putting us on a Delta flight leaving 4 hrs later headed for Philly. Unfortunately, we would arrive close to midnight but at least we’d be in the state of PA. To make a long story short, it took us 13 hours, a lot of nail biting and teamwork to get to our respective homes, but we made it safely.

Minneapolis was a private party and we got in the day before so we had time to walk around the area. My band members are all accomplished, positive, amazing musicians and we share a lot of laughs offstage. This evening was no different. As we walked around looking for somewhere to eat, we wound up at the Dakota Jazz Grill. We met the owner, Lowell, who shared he’s been trying to book me for over a year now; COOL!! I wound up sitting in on SUMMERTIME with the band that was playing, cuz I couldn’t help myself when the first chords rang in the air, had drinks and a great meal with promises to return sometime soon.

Our Musikfest Candlelight Series performance capped off the entire weekend and was fraught with every challenge one could imagine in one day. We departed our MN hotel at 5am for a 7am flight into Philly. Upon our arrival we went in separate directions only to meet up again for sound check. I realized upon arriving at our hotel that there was no need for me to even check in considering I had just enough time to eat before my radio interview and soundcheck, so I didn’t. Soundcheck found some of my band members without their music because they thought we would have time to return to the hotel before the show; WRONG. And, Foy Hall’s hall (haha) was an acoustical nightmare!! BUT, alas, we pulled it off complete with some good footage filmed by Service Electric. We received an amazing review, so it all worked out putting a nice flourish on a an otherwise challenging week. What was that commercial that said “Never let ‘em see you sweat”? Indeed.

I am now in Beijng, China and this experience will be chronicled in forth coming blogs…..

Hope all of you are well! Remember to stay that way!

Simone

STT Tour Comes to the End http://feeds.artistdata.com/a-C3SJ7GFDSRFZ407M/ADN-BG-FGZSL48DENBK4JEA Blog entry by Simone

Greetings all,

How have you been since my last blog? I write you from a plane headed from Atlanta to my next gig in Utah. I still have to make a concerted effort to remember what day this is….Saturday, 1 August, 2009.

I’ve been journalizing less due to keeping you abreast of my peripatetic life and in so doing have created my own “simone’s Blogs” folder which will now become my new journal. That’s a huge change as I’ve been journalizing since 1992. The digital age has now crossed over into a very personal area and I’m really cool with that. Mind you, I can’t share every nuance of my life, but I can include you as I traverse a path long desired with regards to my career and the ripple effects it has in various areas of my life.

Having said that, I will begin with today’s clash of two important areas: motherhood and career. In order to make this flight I said “see you soon” to my daughter amidst tears (which still threaten) on both sides and a promise to reunite in 10 days. As I was driven away I held up 10 fingers as a reminder to countdown each day. She stood there with two people who have been mainstays throughout my life and I’ve chosen to call my “earth angels”; Al schackman, my mother’s longtime friend and MD and my cousin, Joyce stroud. I was flooded with images of myself at her age with so many emotions and memories to juggle while I did my best to maintain my game face lest we lose it altogether. Saying goodbye has never been and will never get any easier when it comes to my family. Two days ago, reanna and I said “see you soon” to her father and I fought the tears that threatened as I watched him leave, as well. Such is the life of a performer who is also a wife and mother. When I prayed to become a superstar I didn’t take any of this into consideration such was my desire. Now that I’m on the road to fame, the last thing I will do is complain but I can acknowledge an aspect of this life that never gets any easier. Remember, I was once the daughter (as the “child in me” so aptly describes), now, I’m the mother and I’ve written and recorded a song which is slated for the new cd (HOORAY!!) called “The hardest part” which deals with this very subject.

Last night lizz wright, Dianne reeves and I, together with my mother’s band once again paid tribute to NINA. We were joined by two new positive, energetic talented ladies: joi and geri allen as Angelique kidjo and Jeremy berlin could not be with us. The audience at the woodruff center in downtown atlanta welcomed us from the first word spoken and the first note sung. I say the first word spoken because much to our surprise 3 distinguished ladies spoke about the event and my mother prior to the actual show, as we know it, beginning. I’m not good with names and I meet so many people at the same time amidst so much – look I’m still trying remember what day it is – that I don’t remember their names. These ladies are well known and much respected in the industry, so check out the websites connected with the “ATLANTA BLACK ARTS FESTIVAL” and I’m sure you’ll see pictures and captions. I’ll look as well because I need to brush up in this area as well.

Anyway, the evening was a whirlwind of activity, song and celebration. My daughter got a chance to see the show for the first time and I’ve a picture Dianne reeves took of her watching me from the wings which evoked another flood of memories when I saw it….geez!! speaking of reanna, she was a hit last night with everyone she came in contact with for she is a happy child and her joy is contagious. For those of you who know of her ability to “see” and “hear” from her appearance on Psychic kids, larry king and tyra banks, may I share what she shared with me during last night’s show. And for those of you who don’t believe in “that kind of stuff” skip to the next paragraph….. ReAnna whispered in my ear that my mother was onstage with us last night dressed in a black gown with gold sandals and a golden headwrap that stood high like joi’s hair was done. Actually, when joi was singing her first song, Dianne and a couple of other adults commented there was a brief shadow behind her that has become a familiar symbol of Nina – the profile with the high headdress. It didn’t appear again, but ReAnna shared Mommy was present for the rest of the night at times playing piano beside geri and at one point laying down in front of the monitors as Lizz sang “images” and sitting in front of paul robinson and leopoldo fleming as they kept time. I can’t “see”, so it was a real treat to hear my daughter share this with me. I “feel” and am aware of Mommy always but I sure do wish I could “see” her!!! I use to pray to see her until I realized if that happens I’ll be able to see things I don’t want to as well, so I stopped praying for that.

We received a standing ovation and the hubbub backstage was crazy!! I met people who knew my grandmother, saw my favorite nanny, coquita (and told her she made the best cream of wheat of them all), hugged one of my godmothers and earth angels, Hannah Ferguson, who attended allen high school for girls alongside Mommy when she was Eunice, passed out flyers for the upcoming NSF fundraiser (which I’ll share more about in another blog) and kept track of my child throughout as we took pictures, reminisced, made introductions and swapped contact information……whew!!! By the time ReAnna and I got back to the hotel room we had just enough energy to change, brush our teeth and eat a little something we’d been saving for that very moment.

You’ve traveled the world with me as I paid tribute to my mother alongside some pretty amazing people. From the Divas, to my mother’s band, as well as the behind the scenes - but equally important - production crew and the promoter!! Together we laughed, cried, complained, got on each other’s nerves, broke bread, sang, danced, cheered each other on and supported each other throughout to ensure we always brought our best game to the stage. No matter the circumstances, we did not let it affect our show nor did we forget for one second who we were there to celebrate. If I had to do it all again, I would!

I have not forgotten about the photos, so stay on the lookout. Some future blogs will simply be pictures from the tour which will tell their own story. I hope you enjoyed the trip as I experienced it and I look forward to continuing our journey together.

STAY WELL -

Simone

Today's Blog: Sing the Truth - Somewhere in Spain http://feeds.artistdata.com/a-C3SJ7GFDSRFZ407M/ADN-BG-NBXOW7LYWSP72K32 Blog entry by Simone

Greetings from Valencia,

Whew!!! It's getting harder to fit blogging in the closer we get to finishing this tour.....but I am determined to see all of you through to the end with me.

Before getting into the present day, I MUST recount our Montreaux experience as it rivals July 24th 1999, the evening I first shared the stage with my mother captured on the first track of SIMONE on SIMONE (SOS).

I napped for 2 hours while there before preparing for the evening. That preparation usually consists of putting my things together for a show: makeup, shoes, outfit(s) - never take just one JUST IN CASE - accessories, tea, camera, and whatever else I think I might need during the course of time leading up to the evening's events. As we walked to the venue, I was surprised by a few people who had 8 x 10 shots of me to autograph: I was only too happy to do so. I'd met Al's niece, Tashi , a 10 year old who reminded me very much of my daughter and I invited her to join me in some picture taking.

Upon arriving at the venue, which was a 3 minute walk from our hotel, we were escorted to our dressing rooms and updated on our schedule which consisted of soundcheck/show times, interview locations, whereabouts of catering, makeup and the stage. I marveled at names on dressing room doors: Wyclef Jean & Grace Jones just to name a few. Throughout the halls there was activity and a sense of excitement and constant movement. The first thing I did was introduce myself to the makeup artists set up across the hall who were sponsored by Helena Rubenstein. I made an appointment for one hour prior to our scheduled 8 o'clock hit with Danielle and showed her the infamous Gold Outfit I'd be wearing so she could coordinate my visage.

The show started on time and Claude Knobbs, the Festival's founder introduced us. Just prior to that he and I took pictures together and he reminisced about 1975/6 when he helped my mother put me in boarding school in Lausanne and find her house in Nyon. Never ceases to amaze me when holes of times past are filled in because I definitely had an "AHA, it was you!!" moment. When the show began time slowed down as a 30 year dream became reality. Claude Knobbs films every show that takes place at Montreaux so this performance will forever line in infamy. It felt good. I looked good. My voice was in good standing. The band was on point. The Divas strutted their stuff. And, the audience slurped up every nuance with gusto and warmth. It was perfect.

Just when the evening couldn't get any better, I saw Qiuncy Jones stand up as I exited the stage. I don't know how much of the show he saw, but he was sitting stage left next to the door we entered and exited and as he did so I placed my hands on his shoulders and had to restrain myself from placing him in a bear hug, such was my excitement. OH MY GOOOOOOOD!!!!! You all don't understand, I have prayed to someday meet and work with him. The only time I ever spoke to him face to face was when I was a swing on B'dway with RENT in 1996. I told him how much I admired his work but I did not mention my lineage. My father later told me that Quincy had wanted to sign Mom to Mercury when he was doing A & R there so they all knew each other; and had I mentioned my parents perhaps my path would've been different. And, perhaps not. At that time I didn't feel comfortable trumpeting my lineage and much preferred people to get to know ME, the person based upon my own merit. Well, that was 13 years ago!!!!! I reveled in THIS moment. He asked me if I'd ever heard of Siedah Garrett - HA, but of course!!! - and said I reminded him of her. What a compliment! He also said "Girl, you've got something special" a couple of times.......I still glow when I think about it. So many words came out in a jumble as the excitement of being within proximity of one of my idols on the Montreaux stage swept me off my feet. It was a great day!!! Oh yeah, Quincy was sitting right next to Naomi Campbell and it didn't even register until I was in my dressing room....it all happened so fast.

Upon returning to our hotel, The Montreaux Palace, I maneuverd through throngs of people enjoying the festival. It was midnight and it felt like 42nd street on New Year's Eve. The excitement in the air was palpable and I had an unobstructed view of everything from my balcony. As the thumping music lulled me to sleep I had a huge smile on my face, a glow in my heart and I thanked Mommy and God for answering my prayers.

It was a good day!!

Stay well

Simone

Today's Blog: Sing the Truth - On the Train to Rotterdam http://feeds.artistdata.com/a-C3SJ7GFDSRFZ407M/ADN-BG-K6165PC5QILIBTPN Blog entry by Simone

Greetings Everyone,

We are on a train traveling from Ghent to Rotterdam. Last night's Ghent show was another success and I've no doubt tonight will be the same....:-) considering each show has become less technical and more natural as we begin to truly live and interpret the chosen songs. The only song we all do together, at this time, is FOUR WOMEN and WOW!!!! Talk about becoming the "woman" in the verse and telling each story; it's a theatre director's dream. We bring the house down each night and leave the people wanting more. That's what we have to work on now; our group ENCORE, but with our schedule as arduous as it is and the quest for sufficient rest ever looming, there's no time or energy. We opt to rest instead with what time we have or we may have interviews to do to prepare for the next city. AAAAH, The dynamics of touring and the constant balancing act.

Altogether now: SOUND GLAMOROUS????????????????

Just a little something I thought I'd share for those of you coming to Atlanta on July 31st to see us participate at the: 21st ANNUAL NATIONAL BLACK ARTS FESTIVAL (Woodruff Arts Center Symphony Hall)

Hope to see you there,

Simone

Today's Blog: Sing the Truth Montreaux http://feeds.artistdata.com/a-C3SJ7GFDSRFZ407M/ADN-BG-375HBTLDSZ7DBNPI Blog entry by Simone

Greetings All!!

We're at Schipol Airport in Holland awaiting the gate number for our flight to Geneva, Switzerland. The name "Geneva Switzerland" brings back many memories of my time at boarding school in Lausanne , Switzerland in 1975-76. The biggest city within proximity was Geneva and we went often I was 13/14 years old and it was an experience I will never forget having learned how to snow ski while making many great friends. The Doobie Brothers and Cat Stevens (when he still was calling himself that) were just a few of the artists that were all over the radio. I started playing guitar during that time, perfecting the intro to "Stairway to Heaven" and jumped off the 2nd floor balcony of the gym beacuse someone dared e and wound up tearing ligaments in my ankle......ahhh, the memories.

My mother performed at the Montreaux Jazz Festival that year. I'm sure many of you have seen the DVD that has been on the market....it's riveting, to say the least for she was in rare form. I still have the flyer from that festival in a photo album and i remember hoping to one day be a part of it. Well, the time has come!!!! 30 years later. God answers prayer.

Last nights show at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam was okay. We were 3 without Angelique and we held it down gracefully, but the audience seemed to be out of it having been there ALL day long (someone yelled that out). Our set began at 12:20 am which is late to be going on at all and they stayed. The show already goes by fast with 4 of us and last night's flew by with 3. We, three performed 4 women and closed it out to a standing ovation. It was not easy considering we'd been traveling all day having been up since 6 am and had a trip fraught with minor issues that wore us down.

By the time we arrived by train at Rotterdam station there was no one from the festival in sight. we schlepped our many bags in a freight elevator, that obviously doubled as a WC , to street level and there we waited until the vehicles assigned to pick us up arrived. The drive to the Schipol Hilton Hotel took about an hour. We checked in and went to our respective rooms. Upon entering my lovely room I wanted to call my loved ones and noticed there was no dial tone on either of the phones. I went down to reception. To make a long story short, I had to go down to reception twice before the phones were fixed and managed to get a message to my husband to please call me after having absolutely no luck reaching him or being able to leave a message - imagine my disappointment. THEN, I decided to use the hotel's sauna......it was OUT OF ORDER, as was the steam room as well. With only 2.5 hours to sleep, eat, sauna or whatever I'd already lost one. I wound up taking a bath and ordering room service; both of which were wonderful AND talking to my husband, so all was well.

We drove to the venue ( 45 mins each way ) and made our way through the maze of bldgs the North Sea Jazz Festival were being held in - WOW!!!! It was like a complex....so many people, artists, and stages. By the time we graced the stage at 12:20am!!!! And the rest I already wrote about above.

What you don't know is that I did not go to sleep AT ALL last night......not one wink. I was the first of our party in the lobby at 5:45 am and we were off to the airport. I fell asleep with my head on my lap at the gate and had to be awakened otherwise I would still be there hahaha...it's only funny because I'm here now:-). I slept all the way here on the plane and in the van as we drove one hour to wht is now our hotel. Today I will do what my body needs...after I eat something nourishing.

NOW !!!!! I have no words to adequately describe the Palace Hotel I am now blogging from located here in Montreaux, Switzerland!!!!! IT IS BEAUTIFUL. Another destination you MUST put in your wish list. I am so tired my body doesn't know what to do. I'm awaiting room service and writing this from my balcony which has an unobstructed view of Lake Geneva. I wish we could be here for an extra day. Oh well, no doubt I will be coming back here to perform and when I do I know what awaits and how to plan. The day is sunny and warm, just the way I like it. And we're scheduled to leave for soundcheck at 5:30 for an 8 pm show.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Stay well,

Simone

Greetings from Athens, Greece - Home of the Parthenon, the Acropolis and so many wonderful historical sites.....

We arrived today around noon and the weather was warm and inviting................ that's as far as I got this morning at 2 am (up again). I decided to take a little sleeping aid given to me - over the counter, thank you!!- and wound up sleeping 11 hours!!!!! Thank GOD, I needed it. I got up at 2:30 this afternoon fully rested and ready for a meal and some shopping!!!!!

It's now close to midnight here on July 6th and I am in the dressing room after our 3rd show which took place outside on the mountain under a FULL moon and clear skies!! Mommy played this same stage, you know!! I wanted to share the experience of this evening with you while we wait for the mountain to clear. You see, there's only one road that leads to this place and most people walk, so we're waiting....and I'm writing you.

Tuesday, July 7

Sitting in the Athens airport awaiting our flight to France....I've been making attempts, as you've read and am determined to finish this!!

So, without further adieu.......Upon arriving I managed to visit the Parthenon with Danny, our promoter and Derek, the production manager, and it was EVERYTHING I'd hoped!!!! If you've never been to Greece put in on your travel wish list.

Prior to taking in the sites I had an interview with a TV station. Much to my surprise there was a HUGE picture of Mommy and I (ya'll have seen the shot a thousand times) with the "sleepy-time rhymes" book, flanked by smaller shots - of Mom back in the day and of me now - on the cover of the paper. I was asked questions about my experiences as her daughter and how it felt to be in Greece doing the tribute. Interesting how one can be asked the same questions in a different country. Folk seem to find it especially interesting that I’ve embraced my Legacy. I, personally feel that in order to get to know and accept yourself you have to get to know and accept where you come from. Not a whole lot of contemplation went into it when I initially made the decision; it was just a natural progression....guess that's how many life altering things happen - at least in my life :-) I digress...

We must've spent least 2 hours on Parthenon Mountain (that's my name for it) and it was time well spent. Took loads of pictures and marveled at the architecture as well as the fact we were walking amongst ruins that have stood for thousands of years - if those walls could talk!!! When we initially left the hotel we were hungry. We forgot all about our hunger for awhile when we were "marveling" only to be assaulted by it again the moment we came down. We ran into Lizz at the bottom of the hill and all 4 of us began our quest for something to eat. THAT was another adventure. By this time my legs were hurting because I hadn't followed my instincts and worn flip flops instead of sneakers combined with the fact my muscles were aching from the show the night before - being cute in extra hi heels has it's price!!! At one point we passed through what's coined “Ammonia Square" as we searched for a restaurant and were surrounded on all sides by people who were HIGH as HELL on God knows what. We felt like aliens in a strange land - GEEZ!!!! - and the heat of their stares. After making it through the gauntlet we finally took a taxi to a well known area with lots or restaurants and enjoyed a nice dinner. I even had a glass of wine (took a preventative Claritin) to toast a fine day off that was well spent. The Parthenon did not disappoint and exceeded my hopes.

The show was one of the few outdoor ones on the schedule and a venue where my mother has played. I can't figure out how to spell it, so I leave it up to you to look at my schedule - okay, I'll try - the Lybetticus Theatre - Impressive!!! The morning of the show the promoter was nervous because the forecast was saying rain. I've run into that at 2 of my 4 NY gigs and couldn't allow myself to worry. By the time the evening came around and the afternoon showers had passed, there were inklings of thunder here and there under a partly cloudy sky. As far as I was concerned, the Gods and Goddesses of Olympus were assembling for the evening's festivities. This place is an old amphitheatre surrounded on 3 sides by rock walls and you're at the top of a mountain.

Each night we take a before show picture and we continually marvel at how our outfits are always coordinated. This evening was no exception. As we paid tribute to the High Priestess of Soul the full moon was at our 12 o'clock the entire time, and the skies were clear.

The performance was another success with 3 encores, the last one being Al and myself doing SUZANNE; it was natural, fun and so appropriate considering he's known me ALL my life, was friends and Mom's MD for about 50 years and was actually one of the angels in my life growing up.

That's all for now - the schedule has now entered the GAUNTLET: 5 shows in 5 days in 5 different countries (OMG)!! Sound glamorous?????????????????????????

Please send us positive energy, prayers for good rest and that we can all be in good voice.

Hoping all of you are well.

Until the next blog –

Simone

Today's Blog: Greetings from Copenhagen http://feeds.artistdata.com/a-C3SJ7GFDSRFZ407M/ADN-BG-KI93G5X8GI4D85HH Blog entry by Simone

Greetings from Copenhagen,

The time is now 1:30pm local time and we just checked into our hotel. My suite is so nice I had to take pictures. Speaking of pictures, I've been taking them and will share them as soon as I can - who knows if that will be while we're on the move, but I will try.

I do hope you have been enjoying the blogs i've been writing while on this tour. We've only done one show so far and that was in Warsaw. Tonight will be our second one here in Copenhagen and I'm looking forward to it. Thank God!! I was wondering what was wrong with me as I prepared to come on tour because I was not excited. Probably because I didn't want to leave my family; it's always hard. Now that I'm in the zone I am living this to it's fullest.

All of us, with the exception of mom's drummer, Paul Robinson (who lives in England) are having a hard time adjusting to the time. As we met for breakfast at 6:30 this morning we found ourselves lamenting over the same thing: an inability to sleep. GREAT - just what we need on a tour like this. It will correct itself in due time. So far I've seen two sunrises in a row and marveled that in Warsaw the sun comes up at 4 am at this time of year.

I have been pleasantly surprised by the weather!!! It's been BEAUTIFUL!!!! I sit in the sun outside the hotel cafe with a ceasar salad as I write this. We depart in 90 mins for the venue for a 3 hour rehearsal, photoshoot and show....does that sound glamorous???

There've been some interesting (I can call it that now that it's over) experiences with our luggage both in Poland and here - it has taken almost an hour due to multiple belt changes to get our luggage. Imagine 12 people with 2 bags each (not counting carry ons) moving as a group within a herd of other passengers from belt to belt in hopes of finding their belongings. And, that's after virtually no sleep, changing weight requirements which are never in the passenger's favor, a long day and a show to do.....

The time is now 2 am and I'm packed and ready to depart at 6 am!!!! We're headed to Athens, Greece. AND there's no show until tomorrow night (this is now Sunday morning, right?) LOL

Last night's show was amazing!!!!!!! It was filmed live and the place was packed. The audience was warm, responsive and wouldn't let us leave - there were 3 encores. The Hall is 360 degrees so there were people totally surrounding us - the only thing missing was a revolving stage. the sound, lights and crew were top notch and the night was a huge success. All of us, including the band have become more cohesive and it's kind of scary to contemplate how powerful this show's going to be by the time we get to Montreaux. Now THAT will be another dream come true...WOW!!

Tonight as I watched the ladies do their songs I marveled at how different we are; in stature, body type, hair, background and singing style. Our coming together is a complete package and it works quite well. The main thing we all have in common is our love and admiration for my mother. When I talk to Dianne and hear how long she has admired my mother's work, songs and message I realize she's studied NIna like a student and when she performs BE MY HUSBAND, I PUT A SPELL ON YOU and DO I MOVE YOU (a fantastic arrangement that's not bluesy at all) she has done her homework. Angelique not only met and admired my mother but had a close relationship with my godmother, Miriam Makeba, both of them being from South Africa, too. When she takes to the stage dancing and twirling to the drums on SEELINE WOMAN her energy is contagious and her delivery as honest and open as she is. NE ME QUITTE PAS has a samba feel which is nice and makes it less heavy. Lizz evokes a stillness and the art of truly taking her time when she performs IMAGES accapella and LILAC WINE. We, Divas support each other, encourage one another other and vibe off each other as we grow onstage. It's wonderful considering we're all solo artists who are normally the only Diva on the stage.....and it's heartwarming. We laugh alot and I feel good knowing I've made some new friends that I will know for a long time; ladies I have long admired. Check it out: I first started listening to Dianne Reeves when I was active duty in the USAF stationed in Germany in the late 80's. Angelique Kidjo's voice serenaded me each evening as I prepared to go onstage at the Palace Theatre as AIDA from 2002-2003. And, Lizz's cd THE ORCHARD remains a staple in my Ipod and my car. I LOVE IT !!!!

A group of us are excited to visit the Parthenon tomorrow shortly after we land. I've been talking about this since I knew we were going to be in Athens, so I hope it's everything I've imagined. I will let you know.

Gotta try and get some sleep - wish me luck!!

And, stay well.

-

Sing the Truth: POLAND http://feeds.artistdata.com/a-C3SJ7GFDSRFZ407M/ADN-BG-CAZJLR7UGG18TVK0 Blog entry by Simne

Greeting Everyone!

I am tired!! It's 2 am here in Poland and I should be going to bed but I wanted to share what was yesterday's events with you while it's still somewhat fresh.

The entire Company spent the day at Congress Hall, the theatre we performed in. We, Divas left the hotel at 1:45 pm headed for the theatre for a day of rehearsal, interviews and the show. We ran down FOUR WOMEN first - here's the lineup: Angelique = Aunt Sarah, Lizz = Saphronia , Yours Truly = Sweet Thing, and Dianne = Peaches....Imagine THAT!!!!

Congress Hall is impressive!! High ceilings, expansive, red velvet chairs, lots of gilded designs on the walls and ceiling and as soon as I walked on it's stage for rehearsal I felt a huge lump in my throat. I had to keep from crying as I greeted the gentlemen I've known since I was a baby. To share the stage with them, once again, in this place and to be doing so in the name of my mother just became overwhelming. I still cannot adequately put into words everything I felt at that moment. One thing I know, while others can jump on board for a brief time and go back to their lives, this IS mine. I walk it every moment. That so many would come together to pay homage to my mother still makes me choke up, and often when I least expect it.

Anyway, rehearsal went well and the day went by fast. The doors opened at 7:30 and the show began at 8:15. Lizz Wright opens the show with I LOVES YOU, PORGY and follows up with OLD JIM CROW. I'm next and I begin with the WORK SONG followed by I HOLD NO GRUDGE. Angelique then goes on with SEELINE WOMAN and NE ME QUITTE PAS. Dianne brings it home with BE MY HUSBAND and DO I MOVE YOU. Then it's back to Lizz and the rest of us do two more songs each before our finale , FOUR WOMEN. Tonight as Dianne took her Peaches verse, she said "I'll kill the first motherFUCKER I see" - I was aghast even though we all know that's what Mom meant. Something happened, the air shifted and my mother began to channel through Dianne, that's the best way I can put it. It was powerful. We came back for 3 bows and Dianne said some words into the mike that I believe is yoruba, then she began to chant NINA as the audience responded then she chanted SIMONE and the audience responded, and I burst into tears. LORD!!!!! And, this is just the first show - we've 11 more to go!!

Dianne has been sharing many memories about my mother. It seems she studied her, related to her and feels a kinship that was evident tonight. During her second round of songs she recited a poem she'd written about my mother as an intro into one of the songs. It's beautiful. I can hear Dianne Reeves doing an album of Nina Simone songs - she would do them justice and I would be first in line to purchase it, such is my belief in her ability to pull it off. I told her so.

Well, Ya'll this Diva is ready for bed. I will sleep well after this and enjoy a day off tomorrow - it's one of 3 scheduled days off between today and July 17th, so I plan on enjoying it.

I hope all of you are well:-)

Stay that way!

Greetings from Warsaw, Poland! http://feeds.artistdata.com/a-C3SJ7GFDSRFZ407M/ADN-BG-1A9GR1VDFZBWKN4J Blog entry by Simone

Hi Everyone!! Greetings from Warsaw, Poland.

After a 3 hour delay and a 9 hour flight, I am operating on fumes. Wanted to take a moment to share with you the events of the last 24 hours while it's still fresh.

Met Angelique Kidjo and Diane Reeves for the first time at the airport yesterday. Lizz and I already know each other from the last SING THE TRUTH (STT) concert we did at Carnegie Hall. She's still as cool as she was then, an Old Soul. And like her voice, a warm glowing spirit.
Angelique came in to the lounge like a fireball of energy!! She's tinier than the rest of us in stature, me running a close second, but that's the only tiny thing about her. She is vibrant and overflowing with positive energy - she will bowl you over if you're not secure with yourself - and leave you breathless wondering "who was that amazing African Sistah?"

Diane is beautiful, elegant, grounded, and in her element. She made me feel welcome from the first syllable she spoke and her smile lights up the room. We all got a chance to get to know each other during the 3 hour delay..... and it was all natural as we shared, laughed, and ate together. If the synergy we have offstage is any indicator, the shows are going to be OFF THE CHAIN!!!!!!!

Feels good to see my "Uncles/Godfathers" Al Schackman, Leopoldo Fleming and Chris White. I met Paul Robinson as an adult while active duty and visiting Mommy in France in the early, early 90's, and Jeremy Berlin, who'll be playing piano at rehearsal the other day. All the musicians are with us and when we recreate mom's music together it's like an old comfortable shoe that I'll never throw away. With the exception of Jeremy and Chris, everybody was onstage at the Guiness Blues Festival when Mom and I did Music for Lovers together, track #1 on SoS. And, my daughter was 6 weeks old.

I was a bit taken aback when a passenger approached me on the plane with pen and article in hand in hopes of getting an autograph. When I saw the article had 3 pictures and mine was not among them, I told him my autograph was not one he was seeking. On the one hand it's nice to see the excitement surrounding our performances celebrating my mother, Nina, yet at times like this I still have to remind myself I'm not chopped liver....... I am in the company of some amazing Divas who have toured throughout the world. I am the unknown, the "daughter" of a Legend. Well, I won't be unknown for much longer and I am confident there will be 4 pictures soon enough. I think of our President Barack Obama, a lot of people didn't know him either - not anymore.

Forgive me, but I have a new MAC (I switched from PC) and my facebook has not been allowing me access, so I cannot answer your comments (YET). I just mastered Skype today and will get around the block on Facebook as soon as I can. Until then, I will continue to blog as we travel and share with you my experiences along the way.

Look at that, 3 blogs in the last 2 weeks, I think? Not bad.

I do hope all of you are well.

Stay that way!

Simone

My Thoughts on Michael Jackson http://feeds.artistdata.com/a-C3SJ7GFDSRFZ407M/ADN-BG-HHPGTMZQ1APPIRQW Blog entry by Simone

I began to Tweet about the heartbreaking news on Michael Jackson and realized (considering I kept typing too many characters) I simply needed to stop half stepping and write without worrying about being edited.

Yesterday as I walked around Aventura Mall in Aventura Florida I heard someone yell out "Michael Jackson's dead". I didn't pay it any mind, wondering if that person was trying to be funny as some folk are wont to do. I love Godiva's dark chocolate almond bark, and as I treated myself to one the attendant behind the counter echoed what I'd just heard. My jaw dropped!!!!!
I asked the attendant to repeat himself and give me details, for surely there was some error. As my daughter and I walked to our car I asked people I saw in the parking lot and they confirmed it. I turned on the radio as we drove home and they were playing nothing but his music as they commented on what I refused to believe. As we continued to drive on 95 we saw an exit sign for Jackson Memorial Hospital and we both commented at the same time; ReAnna asked if the sign had just been placed there.......I replied "no, we're just noticing it for the first time".

I awoke this morning in tears..... spoke to a sister girlfriend, and she shared she too had cried herself to sleep. I have not watched the news as yet because I'm sure it's everywhere and will be in the days and possibly weeks to come. I can't.
What is happening?????????????????????? It seems our GREAT ones are crossing over at an alarming rate.

I remember listening to I WANT YOU BACK as an 8 year old, dancing around the kitchen, seeing the Jackson 5 on Soul Train, Sonny and Cher, Flip Wilson's show just to name a few. Their family variety show (which rivaled The Osmonds) was great.... little Janet did her Mae West impression with gusto to Randy's sidekick. And, their cartoon with the two mice as Michael's little friends and their dance moves that stayed the same no matter the song.

Let's not forget when he broke out at Motown 25, I was stationed in Frankfurt Germany at the time, and blew everybody's mind with Billie Jean!!!!!!

Everybody else's performance paled in comparison. Everything he touched and put his voice to was golden whether it was a radio hit or not. It was Michael: Innovator, Pioneer, Trend Setter, Son, Brother, Father, King of Pop and a soul who was way ahead of his time. Because of that he was too often misunderstood, judged, villified and condemned.......now that he's dead his memory will be upheld in the same way my mother's has been.

GOD REST HIS SOUL, EASE THE PAIN AND SUFFERING OF HIS LOVED ONES, AND MAY WE ALL REMEMBER AND HONOR HIM THE WAY HE DESERVES.

June 24, 2009: Greetings World!! http://feeds.artistdata.com/a-C3SJ7GFDSRFZ407M/ADN-BG-UGDYIPUSJ3EEYSJ1 Blog entry by Simone

Greetings World!! Hope this finds everyone well. I sit at my computer having been awakened by my neighbor’s TV blasting at 7:30 am…..some people don’t seem to be able to hear very well, it seems. They were nice enough to turn it down when I knocked on their door and now I’m writing you – 2 months late!

Where has the time gone? And, what have I been doing?

Let’s see……I opened up the Jacksonville Jazz Festival with my the new band lineup on May 22nd. These 4 gentlemen are fantastic musicians and great human beings. I will have their bios posted on my website soon enough so all of you can get to know them. Jacksonville was our first gigand we came out swinging. It feels so good to share the stage with fellow musicians who can play anything. Par example, BLACK IS THE COLOR now begins a la “Come Together” by the Beatles and shapeshifts at least 3 more times before it ends. And DYSFUNCTION, is now the get down funky acid jazz song it was always intended to be.

I want to take a moment to thank all the other musicians I’ve had the pleasure of working withthis past year and change. You are master musicians and I am thankful to each and every one of you for playing an important part in helping me to get where I am today.

We opened up for one of my idols, Stanley Clark – meeting him was a treat. I listened to his music a lot when I was active duty. His trio was outstanding, doing some real innovative stuff and never sacrificing the groove.

The skies were grey the entire time we were in Jacksonville; apparently, hurricane season decided to attend the festival as well. Luckily for me I didn’t get rained out despite moments of showers during our set.

My daughter turned 10 years old on Memorial Day,which found us here in Miami enjoying some sun in between storm clouds. My eldest son was visiting from Ghana so it was quite the family day. Seems like yesterday my little one was a little girl……they grow so fast. I dread the teen years that are not too far off and pray fervently our relationship will not be tested too much.

THEN!!! June 1st, my producers arrived from Amsterdam accompanied by another amazing artist they’ve been working with: BROWNHILL – ya’ll just wait, his stuff will be out soon and I’m sure you will agree he’s got something special. My production team’s company is known as SOULPLANET and they are Michael Wouters and Roni Morgan. Their musical ingenuity ranges from Classical to Funk and everything in between. They actually produced BLACK IS THE COLOR on SoS and that’s Michael playing the piano, recreating my mother’s approach. When they walk into a room I joke that Bach and Sly Stone have arrived.

We spent 10 days at Soundmine Recording Studio in the Pocono Mountains and got quite a lot accomplished. The gentleman who signed me to E1 entertainment formerly known as Koch joined us early on to listen to the direction of the new music. He stayed awhile, listened to everything we played and commented on the elements he felt we should use or not; it was a good meeting and ended with me receiving the hi-sign to proceed. That was a good feeling. The musicians began filing in and the studio was buzzing with activity and laughter as we created the music you will hear on my new project due out sometime mid 2010.

Funny, when I compare the time and effort that went into recording SoS and this CD they are two distinctly different animals. SoStook 5 days. It is also a cover album complete with songs that have been tried and enjoyed for years. This one is a project in progress and already almost 4 weeks have been spent toward its completion with at least 4 more anticipated to comfortably get it done. It’s one thing to work towards your dreams and quite another to live them I am finding out, having never recorded a project of original material. I’ve done demos, and have many cassettes of those demos but THIS is the real deal and I continue to learn as I go – with a huge grin on my face!!!

My daughter has been present for all of the sessions, lending her beautiful voice to the backgrounds along with Brownhill, and giving her opinions when she’s not watching TV or on the computer. She was 9 when we began recording in February, the same age as me when I made my studio debut doing polyrythms on Mom’s album EMERGENCY WARD. It’s amazing, for lack of a better word, to see so many parallels in my life that remind me so much of my mother. Sometimes it’s scary, too!

We finished recording after 10 days, on June 13th and everyone went their separate ways. I flew down here to recharge and get some much deserved alone time, my son flew back to Ghana, the musicians went home and SOULPANET went into NYC for meetings and to enjoy what only NYC can offer before returning to Amsterdam. Was it all a dream? Nope!! Cuz when I listen to my new music, in its unmixed form, I enjoy it immensely and cannot wait for the world to enjoy it too!

I am now back in Miami with my favorite girl and the day after we arrived, which would be Saturday, June 14th, we were on the beach by 10:30am…yessiree!! I am not half stepping. We spent all day on the beach enjoying the sun and the surf; thank God for sunblock! A great way to begin our mother/daughter time prior to my departure for the SING THE TRUTH tour which will be well underway soon enough.

Well, that’s all for now. I have tried to keep up with TWEETing but I forget a lot, so pls continue to bear with me. I want you to know that I went to France in April, arriving on the 6thanniversary of my mother’s death. My husband accompanied me, God bless him, and the experience was many things……I will share that on my next blog because that time deserves to stand on it’s own. Suffice to say, the Black Hole I was so afraid to enter is no more and I am really happy I had the courage to go.

IN ORDER TO BRING ABOUT NEW BEGINNINGS, WE HAVE TO BRING ABOUT ENDINGS. IN ORDER TO RENEW OURSELVES WE HAVE TO CHANGE THE THINGS THAT COMPROMISE OUR WHOLENESS – Susan Taylor, ‘In The Spirit’

Stay well,

Simone

Flickers of Nina Simone Heard in Daughter’s Voice: Philadelphia Tribune http://feeds.artistdata.com/a-C3SJ7GFDSRFZ407M/ADN-NW-B5A3V1JL0KEL0IOB

Written by Jacquinn Williams

Languishing in the gargantuan shadow of her mother — the great jazz contralto Nina Simone — is just not Simone’s style. She’s her own woman. Blessed with the gift of song, Simone is a full-fledged Broadway star who has starred in many a show from “Rent” to “Aida” and continues to wow crowds everywhere with exuberant vocal acrobatics.

Friday night at World Café Live, Simone, whose real name is Lisa Celeste Stroud, entertained fans with a few original tunes and renditions of her mother’s classics. Her mom, Nina Simone, was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon and first aspired to be a classical pianist. However, her musical tastes and abilities stretched far beyond any one genre. As a teenager she moved to Philadelphia where she taught piano and was a freelance accompanist to help fund her education at Julliard. Nina Simone garnered a small but loyal fan base from performing in bars and later gained popularity after recording a rendition of Gershwin’s “I Love You Porgy.”

A career that spanned many decades and transcended color lines, Nina Simone’s voice had the ability to express a range of emotions from passion in one measure to pain in another.

From the very first note, it was evident that the apple did not fall far from the tree. Though her vocal range surpasses her mother’s, the younger Simone performs with reckless abandon. She’s less controlled and her enthusiasm is contagious. With a four-piece band, Simone sang, groaned and grooved through some of the elder Simone’s most memorable works. “Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair,” “Love Me or Leave Me” and “Misunderstood” were some of the night’s most beautiful pieces.

Simone’s love of music was fostered through her mother’s work and the music that surrounded her while traveling with her mother to gigs. Though music was an integral part of Simone’s upbringing, she planned on being a lawyer, not a performer. As a rebellious young adult, she joined the military and worked as a civil engineer. Her first performance came in Germany while still in the military where she performed at a bar. Through word of mouth, Simone started a gig as a background singer and decided to change her life’s direction.

Skipping over some of her mother’s more controversial and/or poignant songs such as “Mississippi Goddamn,” “Four Women” and “Strange Fruit,” this tall, fiery singer clad in a black cat suit and wearing long blond locs kept the tone light and the spirit high.

Seemingly tireless, Simone took a break to talk about how proud she was of her mother. She spoke of her mother’s friendship with Miriam Makeba, how growing up with a musical icon as a mom affected her and how much she missed her.

But, it wasn’t until Simone slowed it down a bit and performed “I Don’t Want Him You Can Have Him” that for a moment, a mere measure or two, it seemed as if Nina was singing it herself.

For more information on Simone, visit www.simonesworld.com. Her album, “Simone on Simone,” is in stores now.

Carrying on: Simone puts her own touches on her mother’s classic tunes.

Derived from the Hebrew Simeon, meaning one who hears, the name Simone evokes a softly European aura.

While she might gladly accept the appellation of chanteuse, Simone is all-American and an accomplished stage actress and vocalist. She is also the daughter of noted singer Nina Simone, whose musical legacy now rests in her daughter’s care.

Though following in her mother’s professional footsteps, Simone has definitely carved her own path. She was last seen in the Bay Area during the national tour of Elton John’s “Aida,” one of many theatrical roles she has undertaken.

“My daughter RéAnna was 2 then. She’s going to be 10 next month!” she says, adding. “Everything is gauged by my daughter’s age now!”

Simone found theater to be an unexpected training ground. “It was not part of my [career] plan, but it has made it possible to do what I am doing now.”

When Simone was still called Lisa Stroud, she studied civil engineering and by the time she decommissioned as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force she had set her career sights on international law. While living in Germany, her first experience publicly singing a song closely associated with her famous mother led her to embrace performing as a new calling.

Warm and elegantly plain-spoken, Simone is pragmatic regarding the preconceptions held about second-generation entertainers. “I’ve read comments people have made about why I have my mother’s name. All I can say is that I chose it to honor her.”

Nina Simone died in 2003. Last year saw the release of “Simone on Simone,” in which daughter paid tribute to Mommy, as Simone calls her, putting a personal touch on classic Nina tracks.

Simone does not feel the burden of legacy that sometime afflicts the children of the famous. “I have a very strong sense of self and of my relationship with my mother. I’m also confident in my abilities, in my talent, and have goals for myself. If this didn’t bring me joy, I wouldn’t be doing it.”

She had actually planned to pay public tribute to her mother while she was still alive, something the elder Simone demurred at the time. “We need to let our great talents, our great leaders know how much they are loved and appreciated while they are still with us,” she says. “I know Mommy’s grinning now. I think she’s very proud that her music and her message are being carried on.”
