The Final Frontier North American Tour 2010
"Let me tell you a story..."  About a new Iron Maiden fan.
My name is Patrick Baxley.  I am in my thirties, and I am just now getting into Maiden.  I know it sounds crazy to just be getting into a band that has been together for as long as I've been alive.  It's even weirder to be just now getting into metal.  I remember around the age of middle school looking at my brother's Megadeth posters and being mortified.  I think I was a little too afraid of going to hell at that point.  I didn't want to risk it.
Once I'd missed the boat of getting into metal in middle school, I felt like it'd passed me by.
What captured my interest most about Iron Maiden is their work ethic.  They have been together over 30 years.  They have had little support from radio or mainstream media, yet they have managed to sell over 70 million records.  They also have devised a way to tour to more countries so they can reach more fans.  They travel in their own 757 Jumbo Jet, "Ed Force One", which carries the band, their family, the crew, and 12 tons of gear to each city.  The plane is piloted by the lead singer, Bruce Dickinson.
So Mike and I and two other friends (veteran fans) headed out for a two-show stint: Pittsburgh and Cleveland.  We were up front in the mosh pit for the first show.  I was absolutely exhausted after watching these guys.  Steve Harris, the bassist gets right up at the front of the stage, puts a foot on the monitor, and proceeds to mow down the audience with his bass, screaming every word right at the people in front.  It was so intense and direct.  Bruce Dickinson, the singer, is quite the actor.  He uses every word and gesture to sell the song.  He keeps the audience right there with him the whole way, directing the crowd for background vocals and claps.  Even though this is a set of less popular songs, the audience knows every move.
I don't know how, but the second show was even better.  I think, because the first show was merely a blur.  When you're in the pit, you're having to fight to stake your ground.  In our seats, we could sit back and take the show in, though we were never sitting.  Highlights of the shows were an homage to Ronnie James Dio before the song "Blood Brothers", every chorus (they really do write the best choruses), and their humble thanks to the audience.
It was inspirational.  On a year when Christina Aguilera and the American Idol tour are cancelling dates due to poor ticket sales, Iron Maiden is doing a pre-album tour and having one of the most well-attended tours in the world. And they do it all their way.

The road is calling. The hot asphalt and late night drives have lost a little of their allure since our van died last year. A van is a rock band's best companion. It's your more than just a vehicle. It's your bar, your back stage, and your place to sleep. Our van died at the worst possible time- right before we were to leave for Weed to record with Sylvia Massey. Our money was spent on recording and we didn't have enough left to get something else. In the past year, we've made do with gigs close to home, but the time is now to introduce the latest member of the family- The Green Beast! It used to be a South Carolina Pesticide Applicator vehicle. Now it's our trusty steed.

A big thanks goes out to everyone who participated in our Will Rock for Wheels fundraiser. Without your support this wouldn't have been possible. You will always be welcome aboard the Beast.

The road is calling- we'll see you soon.

Its an exciting time for us as we shop the demo we recorded last year w/ Sylvia Massey at Radiostar Studios in California.  We're getting some positive feedback and we're hopeful to find a label that loves our music as much as we love writing, recording and performing it.  In the mean time, we're staying focused on writing the best original rock music that we can, recording as soon as possible, buying a van and hitting the road to play live as often as we can.

Since our trip to California last summer, during which we recorded four awesome new songs (Some Call It Hell, Devil Woman, Both Feet In The Fire and The Hunger), we've written six more new songs and debuted them in Columbia for the first time at the Crawfish festival last Saturday.  Some of the tentative titles of the new tunes include: Just Add Rum, Oh Lord, Southeaster and Watch It Grow.

What's interesting to me as a drummer is how all of our new songs, including those we recorded last summer, have more of a swing feel.  Not big band swing... Iron Maiden/Black Sabbath/Doors - rock swing.  That rhythmic style blended w/ Mike and Wes' cool riffs, as well as Patrick's unique melodies and lyrics, has been a big help in us exploring new creative territory.  Plus, Patrick has been playing more harmonica and incorporating it tastefully into the new tunes.  Bottom line?  The songs just plain kick ass and we can't wait to record them.  One of the new songs even has a waltz rhythm in it.  That's right, a waltz!  (Think Stevie Ray Vaughanmeets The Doors.)

Tonight before practice I found Patrick on my porch tapping on the
down spout to my gutter.  Patrick is a weird guy, so this didn't
immediately seem strange to me.   But upon further observation, it was
clear there was something trapped inside the gutter.  You hear could a
small animal climbing up, then immediately sliding back down.
Climbing up, sliding back down'and so on and on.  This was terrible.
We determined it might be a bird b/c we could hear what sounded like
wings flapping every now and then.

Practice was starting so I tried to put it out of mind and get to
work.  But I couldn't.  I couldn't focus on anything.  I just thought
about that poor bird climbing up and then sliding down'.climbing up,
and sliding down.  At our first break, I announced that we needed to
try and save it.  My mind wasn't really on practice anyway.  It was on
the little bird that was going to die in my gutter.

After disassembling the down spout, we figured out the bird wasn't in
the gutter, but in the column that the gutter was attached to.  The
columns are made of metal and mostly hollow with an opening at the
top.  We were hoping we could shift an edge of the column off the
porch to create enough of an opening for the bird to escape.
Unfortunately I had the columns reinforced last year, so they were
difficult to move.  After trying several different ideas we finally
decided to cut a little door at the bottom of the column.  Thankfully
there are some handy guys in the band with some handy power tools.
Once the door was cut and peeled back, we waited.  After a few moments
a little bird rushed out and ran into the bushes and eventually flew
away. I covered the top of the birdie death trap with some mesh and
duck tape.  I'll do something more permanent later.

After an hour of working, we finally freed him.  I don't know how long
he was trapped in there, but he's free now.  I don't think I would
have slept otherwise.

Writing again. It feels great, though a little daunting. Currently listening to over 200 tracks of demos and outtakes on my iPod that we've recorded in the last year or so. I'd love to finish some of this stuff eventually. Hell, I would love to record some of the finished stuff eventually. Just need to choose a starting point I guess. One titled '10-6-09', stood out'mainly b/c I had forgotten all about it.  Thank god for recording devices.  I have no idea if it will become anything- it's just so raw- but simply, and efficiently, evil.  I like it.  I have hope for it.  Sometimes you just hit a wall with seemingly great ideas and they slowly lose their luster over countless reworks.  There's a delicate balance there.

The good news is we do have a couple of songs that should make it into the set list- if not the recording studio- soon. I've taken quite a liking to the drunk foreboding swagger the ideas are taking on these days. It seems appropriate.

Saturday, HLM will be playing at Drink! in Myrtle Beach. It should be a killer rock show with several other bands on the bill from the Myrtle Beach area.

That's where we are. Right before we left for California our van's transmission moved on to greener pastures, literally. So, we thought we would ask for a little help from you.
