The event is free-of-charge and one of the last weekend opportunities to explore the museum's Florida Cattle Ranching: Five Centuries of Tradition exhibition, which tells the story of one of Florida’s oldest and most important cultural activities. Cattle ranching in North America began when Spanish explorers introduced horses and cattle in the 16th century, and flourished in the hands of the Seminoles, Crackers, and other Floridians. Today, ranching is an essential economic activity that preserves many aspects of the natural landscape, protects water resources, and maintains areas used by wildlife or for recreation.

Family Fun Day is on the second Saturday of each month from 12:00PM to 5:00PM. Matthew and Chris perform from 2:00PM to 3:00PM on January 8, 2011.

Summer Concerts and Special Programs http://feeds.artistdata.com/a-AR-A6IK76CNKIAJ8264/ADN-NW-A300A0BD82E417FA Hello. The Rambling String Band recently returned from a wonderful weekend camping and performing at the Florida Folk Festival in White Springs. We're very excited about what we have lined up for the summer, including new recordings (more on that in a future newsletter), our return to a favorite South Florida music room (Luna Star Cafe), a brand new special program that highlights America's experience on the water (Songs of Rivers, Lakes, Canals, and Seas), and Fourth of July concerts.

I invite you now to take a minute to read about these events, get out your calendar and mark the dates you plan to attend. If you know someone else who might be interested in Ballad of America, I encourage you to forward this message. And if you have, or know of, a venue that might be interested in hosting a concert or special program, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us.

For more information on any of the events, including venue addresses and phone numbers, please visit BalladofAmerica.com and click the Performances link.

Matthew Sabatella and the Rambling String Band Rides Again at Luna Star Cafe

On Friday, June 11 from 8:30PM until 11:00PM, the Rambling String Band returns for a concert at one of our favorite venues, the Luna Star Cafe in North Miami, FL. It's hard to believe it's been over a year since we've performed there. I really look forward to stretching out a bit with two big, juicy sets. It's a great room for listening, they have tasty food and a huge beer selection. Admission is $10.

New Special Program: Songs of Rivers, Lakes, Canals, and Seas

One of my favorite parts of what I do is the process of researching and re-discovering old folk songs and putting them together into new programs. The nationwide Collaborative Summer Libary Program has established a reading theme of "water" for libraries this summer. I have thoroughly enjoyed digging up sea chanteys and such to create a new special program related to this theme, which I'll be bringing to South Florida library branches.

Songs of Rivers, Lakes, Canals, and Seas explores the music, history, and folklore of America's experience on the water: voyages across oceans, settlement and travel on rivers and canals, rowing, fishing, and more. It'll be great fun for all ages, from the kids to the grandparents.

  • Thursday, June 17 @ 2:00PM - Broward County Library (Main Branch)
  • Thursday, June 24 @ 10:30AM - Alvin Sherman Library (Nova Southeastern University)
  • Monday, July 12 @ 2:00PM - Broward County Library (South Regional Branch)

Fourth of July Concerts

The Rambling String Band is playing two special Independence Day concerts - one is on July 4 and the other isn't. On Sunday, July 4, from 12:00PM until 3:00PM, we're playing at the Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Picnic at The Barnacle Historic State Park in Coconut Grove, FL. This family-oriented event features lawn games, knot tying lessons, house tours, and more. Hot dogs, popcorn, soda and water will be available for purchase, or bring your own picnic. Coolers, blankets and chairs welcome.

On Thursday, July 1 from 2:00PM until 3:00PM, the Rambling String Band will celebrate like it's Independence Day at the Delray Beach Public Library. Bring the whole family.

Have a wonderful summer, and we hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,

Matthew Sabatella and the Rambling String Band

The song was written during the American Civil War at Thanksgiving time in 1861, as families in the North and South gathered for holiday celebrations and found themselves staring at "the vacant chair." It was one of the most widely sung songs during the Civil War, popular among soldiers and civilians in both the North and South.

To download The Vacant Chair, follow the instructions at BalladofAmerica.com.

Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend, but please take a moment to remember what the holiday is about.
