A poet and musician known for his uniquely intelligent lyrics and passionate performance style, Dirk Hamilton creates music that can't be pigeon-holed into one genre or another, so indie rock, alt-rock, roots music, americana and folk-rock are often used. Eric Hisaw (pronounced HIGH-SAW) is an Austin TX-based performer whose bluesy folk-rock sound will appeal to fans of Alejandro Escovedo, Joe Ely and Tom Russell.  Says the San Antonio Express News: "He's a to-the-bone singing songwriter and guitarist who populates his songs with people from the fringe and with the fringe from which those people come. When Hisaw sings about carnies, wanderers, rogue relatives, beautiful losers and not-so-beautiful losers you know he knows those people."

No surprise then that Hisaw is a big reader: "My lyrics have been really influenced by short stories written by Sam Shephard, Dagoberto Gilb, Raymond Carver,  and Larry Brown," says Hisaw. Based in Nashville, Mare (pronounced Mary) is a frequent visitor to the Central Coast, returning to the Porch Oct. 6 with her Martin acoustic guitar and piano-playing husband (aptly named Nomad!). San Francisco band Con Brio has been called "a funky, acoustic, jazz/blues casserole". Led by soulful vocalist Xandra Corpora, the quintet includes drums, bass, keyboards, and horns. Their debut record, "From the Hip", was released to a sold-out crowd at San Francisco's Cafe du Nord in July 2010. Con Brio continues to light up top Bay Area venues such as Slim's and the Great American Music Hall. This is their second visit to Sculpterra Winery.

Kelley McRae grew up in Mississippi, but calls New York City home. Her albums have found impressive fans: Paste Magazine gave her four stars, WNYC's 'Soundcheck' named her performance one of the year's best and Bob Harris of BBC Radio called her 'brilliant.' Her songs have been featured on MTV, in the Sundance film 'Children of Invention,' on a Unicef commercial, and on the hit TV show 'Army Wives.'

Along with the success of her albums, Kelley has a growing reputation for her powerful live performances. Hank Williams would have turned 88 this September. He died at age 29, but left a deep catalog of country music standards. At The Spot, seven musicians will take on more than 20 Hank classics, such as "Cold Cold Heart", "Lost Highway", "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry". The lineup includes John Elliott, who recently headlined our showcase at The Porch in Santa Margarita, and was also featured in Santa Barbara's famed "Sings Like Hell" concert series.

The Hank tribute will also include Glenn Horn (of the bluegrass band, Better Late Than Never), Jimmy Townsend (of the California Blues Band) and showcase favorites Ted Waterhouse of the BlueSouls, Shannon Savage of That Evening Sun, Randall Lamb, Charles Duncan, and Steve Key.

A former construction worker from a small mill town in Maine, Rod Picott (say PY-kot) moved to Nashville in the mid '90s and earned an opening spot on Allison Krauss' tour. His co-write "Broke Down" (released on Rounder Records by Slaid Cleaves) became the most-played song on Americana radio and won "Song of the Year" at the Austin Music Awards. It was featured last year in the Michael Douglas film, "Solitary Man". Picott is now... touring with his fifth solo CD, "Welding Burns". Amanda Shires has been called "a fiddling maestro". One of our most popular local bands, Young Ireland, takes the headlining spot in our showcase. Young Ireland was formed in 2010 by a family of first and second generation Irish.
